Women’s Basketball Fall in Season Opener

Bellevue College women’s basketball debuted the 2021-22 season with a cold shooting touch and couldn’t recover in an 81-59 loss at Centralia last night. The Bulldogs, playing their season opener weeks after the majority of other teams in the conference had started, came out jittery, shooting 11% from the field in the first quarter. The 2-for-18 mark put BC in a hole 18-8 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Bellevue regained confidence shooting 44% as sophomore McKayla Rodriguez was 2-for-3 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line for seven points. The ‘dogs put up 20 points in the quarter but also surrendered 30 as Centralia also got hotter with a scorching 63% mark from the field.

Down 48-28 at halftime, Bellevue played even in the second half but unfortunately was in a hole they could not get out of.

Brianna Byrnes had 13 points while newcomer Evelyn Loane was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line and had 12 pints. Rodriguez came up big underneath with a team-high 13 rebounds.

The Bulldogs will travel to Peninsula this weekend and will play in the First Federal Pirate Classic in Port Angeles. Their opening game will be Saturday at 3:00 p.m. vs. Wenatchee Valley.
