Collision involving King County Metro bus kills 81-year-old man

On August 15, a collision involving a King County Metro bus and a car killed an 81-year-old man who was a passenger in the car. The crash took place at the intersection of 156th Avenue Northeast and Northup Way at approximately 8 a.m.

The passenger car was traveling westbound on Northup Way and entered the intersection at the same time a bus made a left turn onto northbound 156th Avenue, resulting in a head-on collision.

The driver of the car was transported to Overlake Medical Center to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries, and the 81-year-old car passenger was declared dead on the scene. According to the City of Bellevue, there were no reported injuries to the Metro bus driver and the four passengers who were on the bus.

“During this difficult time, we extend our sincerest condolences to the family who lost a loved one,” said Chris Long, Transportation Assistant Director. “We will continue to work with our partners in the Police Department on this ongoing investigation and to advance our goal to eliminate serious and fatal collisions in Bellevue by 2030 through our Vision Zero Strategic Plan.”

This incident marks the first traffic fatality in the City of Bellevue in 2022. The Bellevue Police Department has found no signs of impairment for either driver, and speed was not a contributing factor of the incident. The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
