King County Expands Mattress Recycling Options On Jan. 1

KING COUNTY, WA — King County will expand mattress recycling services to its transfer stations in Factoria, Shoreline, Vashon Island, Enumclaw and Bow Lake in the new year, offering residents a simple way to offload old mattresses, box springs and futons.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2022, residents can drop off mattresses, box springs and futons in any condition and size for a flat fee of $30 each, officials said Friday. The fees will help offset the program’s cost and cut down on the number of items that end up at the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill. Officials estimate the facility processes 375,000 mattresses, box springs and futons annually from commercial haulers.

Residents can find their closest recycling and transfer centers online and direct further questions to King County’s Solid Waste Division at 206-477-4466. More information on how to properly dispose of tricky items is posted on the King County website.
