Redmond Police Arrest Oregon Teacher During Undercover Operation

REDMOND, WA — An Oregon elementary school teacher was arrested Friday in Redmond after police said he had several sexually-motivated conversations with undercover detectives posing as minors and attempted to meet someone he believed to be underage at a hotel.

Andrew Hammond, 50, a fourth-grade teacher in McMinnville, Ore., is accused of communicating with minors for immoral purposes and attempted rape of a child.

According to Redmond police, Hammond first contacted an undercover detective posing as a 14-year-old girl in October. Several months later, police said he began having sexually explicit conversations with a second detective who he believed was 13 years old.

Detectives said Hammond proposed meeting at a Redmond hotel on Friday, and he was arrested shortly after checking into his room. Police served a search warrant on his vehicle and took several items into evidence, including handcuffs and duct tape.

“I’m proud of our officers and detectives for their dedication to such an important initiative in keeping our children safe,” said Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe. “Any time we can take child predators off the streets for such egregious crimes against children is a win for our community. The important message for parents is to monitor your chidlren’s activities on their phones and computers.”
